After the discussion we had today in class, it seems that school isn't really about obtaining an education. It seems to be about a about following the right political stance... or rather having no political stance. After Professor Salaita posted his Tweets, he had no implications of hurting the University he was newly hired.
One of the questions asked today was why did many women not come out and support the wronging of Salaita. I think that my response to that would be, Im sorry that you lost your job and yes, you were wronged but I'm not sorry that you're experiencing what women experience on a daily basis. Women are silenced every day just like Salaita was in this one situation. While it is incredibly frustrating that the University is not supporting one of their own in academia, it is hard to be sympathetic to the problem.
Salaita is being policed in his private life and that in fact is not right in my eyes. And while he is a person of color, he is still a man. His privilege as his man allows him to fight back. Other men are fighting back for him and taking a stance is solidarity, but it seems that if it were a woman, the same solidarity would not be solicited. I would like to hope so, but history and own personal experience seems to point to no support.
I think that he should be allowed his job back, I wish him the best of luck in his fight but I can't be fully invested because of his male privilege. This may be a harsh statement to make but my alliances are going to be solidarity with women. And supported by the fact that women are silenced in situations like this all the time.

  1. I don't find the argument of having solidarity with women at the expense of men (of color or otherwise) particularly compelling. While the way men women people of color experience oppression is different, it is the same institutionalized force that does the oppressing, against which we should be working as opposed to picking and choosing alliances based on divisive identity politics.
