Space

The idea of space has been brought up in class before. Space meaning where we, as women, feel comfortable, where we don't, spaces were are allowed to be ourselves, and spaces where we have to watch what we say. We often times mentioned spaces that consisted of areas where a lot of other women are present. We feel familiarity within those spaces and do not feel threatened. This idea of space is also presented in the readings for this week.

I feel comfortable is spaces where I know people and believe people to be my friends. I know that in a room full of close friends they will be like minded and I am  able to speak my opinion. Through Brennan's work, it seems that through the act of performing love, instead of just sex. The women in her story are allowed a new kind of space. It allows the women to do more than just having sex for money, it creates an idea of getting away from the terrible space of forced sex. The women create a world where they might be able to get away from selling their bodies, they may be able to create a new life for themselves. While Brennan writes of this idea being a myth, a short term dream of what could be, I think it allows the women hope. A false hope that is a sad cycle of abuse. The town that all of these women live in is a world of tragedy. Women are constantly being made to feel like they can be allowed in spaces and pushed out when their suitors leave.

In the article by Pratt, she talks about women drawing on resources to create new spaces. She writes of women taking from experiences and making new communities and opportunities for themselves. Now while I think that idea of being possible is a little jaded, it can relate to women being  in a situation and being able to create an idea of  a safe space or an opportunity to get out. The hope of getting out can push a woman through to survive a horrible situation. Women should be allowed spaces of freedom.
