The Dominican Republic is  popular tourist location; however, the conditions of the Dominican Republic  makes it very difficult to raise a family, or live a comfortable lifestyle. The currency has little value, and the few jobs that are available cannot financially support a family through the month. What is even more challenging is when there is only one parent, usually the mother, in the household. With only one income to support an entire family, women are not offered many options.

Sosùa is one of these options. Sosúa is seen as a place of opportunity and upward mobility for these so single mothers. They go to Sosúa with the hopes of saving enough money to take care of their families or to start a business or even build a house. With their reliance of sex work, foreigners become the main financial providers in this small place.

Germans and Canadians are Sosúa's main visitors. These men or women travel here with the similar idea of migrants from Dominican Republic: Upward mobility. With the value of he U.S dollar being highly valued than the Dominican Republic currency, living in Sosua is inexpensive. It is possible to live a high class life by disconnecting from their lives they lived in their home countries. Another  idea that they will be  for tSosùa's reputation as a hot spot for sex tourism.

More times than not, however, the ideas that migrant Dominicans and foreign tourists had when coming to Sosua proved to false hope. Among the the sex workers, even the most successful stories ended with woman in worst conditions than before. With love being the furthest thing from their minds, money is the motive of these connections. In the end, however, it often shows that no amount of money is worth the cruel treatment of tourists. Oftentimes, in Elena's experience for instance, their foreign lovers will abandon them, and stop all financial support.

This places dominance and power in the hands of the foreign men. With their hypersexual views of the women of Sosua, they are fulfilling their sexual desires with women who are different from women of their own country. They are able to take care of these women, but are free to cut them off at their own convenience.
